On Hugo

After all the Oscar hype surrounding this film, I decided it was in my best interest to see it. 

Turns out it was not in my best interest to spend money on this film. While I tried, albeit desperately, to like this visually stimulating and gorgeous film in 3D, the plot was lagging and disconnected, the characters uninspired, and the dialogue oftentimes too much for this critic. Hugo was, sadly, a quite over-hyped movie.

As the Academy Awards are across the globe and in the middle of the night, I imposed an assignment on myself to write an inaugural running commentary on our favourite awards show of the year.

Somehow I convinced my wife to stay up…

"None of this year’s nine Best Picture nominees (The Artist, The Descendants, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, The Help, Hugo, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life, and War Horse) counted as dark, nihilistic, or shocking—like some of last year’s leading contenders, including Black Swan, 127 Hours, and Winter’s Bone. None of this year’s major nominees featured the overt left-wing political messages of other recent Oscar favorites like Avatar or Milk, and all of this year’s Best Picture possibilities took affectionate, admiring views of marriage, romance, family, and community, with Moneyball also honoring baseball and business, while War Horse glorified some of the same battlefield virtues depicted in Act of Valor."

Did last night’s Oscars celebrate conservative values? (Was that why they were so bad?)

I don’t think that’s why they were so bad. I think the movies that were honored last night were movies that were stereotypically Oscar-worthy movies instead of movies that took a risk and brought something new to the realm of film.

  • My hopes and dreams are once again crushed
  • Billy Crystal isn’t just Mike Wazowski
  • That movie montage coincidentally had no Oscar winners in it
  • Octavia Spencer is my boo
  • MY POOR KRISTEN DIDN’T WIN ANYTHING
  • Nobody likes John Williams anymore
  • I love the cast of Bridesmaids
  • Hugo is apparently good
  • I have no respect for The Artist or Hugo

Pretty much my entire experience. Why Bridesmaids did not win I do not know. So sad. But everything was quite… disappointing yesterday.
